Dosha Balancing Yoga

Vata Dosha

Vata: The main qualities of Vata are arid, light, cool, coarse, subtle and mobile. Vata controls the body's movement, and nothing will move without it! Individuals who are predominantly Vata are slim, small-framed, fast, adaptable, and they love any kind of change, travel or movement.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta is oily, sharp, sizzling and full of light. This dosha finds strength in water. Liquid essentially balances the fire that leads to a penchant for competition and challenges. Having a predominantly Pitta mind/body constitution means that these characteristics express themselves abundantly throughout your being.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha is the most stable, relaxed dosha of all the mind-body-soul consitutions. It is the strength of incorporation and solidity, but it is also dense, cloudy and viscous. People who are predominantly Kapha express these qualities generously throughout their cerebral, sentimental and physical make up.

At Santosha Spa, we offer DOSHA Balancing Yoga Classes. These yoga classes are different from the typical yoga class, as our teachers bring the wisdom of Ayurveda into the practice and include meditation. The practice of meditation is essential for those on the path of health and balance. Along with yoga asana, proper nutrition and right lifestyle, we use meditation techniques to calm the mind and bring peace to our body and spirit.

Ayurveda recommends customized yoga poses for each unique constitution (Dosha) as well as certain poses for certain times of day and weather conditions. Our yoga & meditation classes are a careful combination of yoga poses, breathing, pace, temperature, and aromatherapy. All of these components add up to nourishing yoga classes which bring balance to your unique mind-body-spirit constitution.

Energizing Sunrise Yoga:

Sunrise yoga is the perfect way to start your day, beginning with the right dose of pranayama (breathing exercise) to prepare the brain and body for the day. Then we will guide you through an invigorating heated yoga practice to balance out the Kapha (slow, heavy and cold) element of the morning time. This class will help you start your day off feeling rejuvenated and alert. The class ends with a nice savasana (corpse pose) and then a guided meditation to start your day off right. This class is recommended for ALL level yogis.

Heat Generating Yoga Burn:

Burn off excess Kapha (slow, heavy and cold) with pranayama (breathing exercise), dynamic and energizing yoga, followed by a guided meditation that will cultivate lightness, energy and clarity. This heat generating, stimulating, and weight reducing class is perfect when Kapha is in excess and will invigorate your body and uplift your mind. It will also prepare your body for the Pitta (hot, oily, sharp) time of the day to ignite your agni (digestive fire) for when you should be eating your biggest meal. This class is recommended for ALL level yogis.

Replenishing Yoga:

Need restoration? Ayurveda recommends a slower yoga practice in the evening to prepare the nervous system for sleep when the body heals and repairs itself. It is not recommended to have an intense energizing practice in the evening, so our yoga classes after 2pm are designed to help manage the Vata (fast, dry, airy and cold) dosha. Often we are stressed & overwhelmed and need some extra replenishment. This class will help balance the nervous system with pranayama (breathing exercise), yoga that is warm and slow paced followed by a guided meditation. Often if Vata is imbalanced, there is excess of movement and anxiety. This calming, slow and mindful pranayama, yoga practice and mini meditation will ground and stabilize. This class is recommended for ALL level yogis.

Yin Yoga:

Yin Yoga is specifically designed to target the connective tissue and joint systems of the body. Deeply held stretches and compressions are utilized to improve range of motion. By allowing the body to be still, we are then able to concentrate on the breath and calm the mind.  It is not recommended to have an intense energizing practice in the evening, so our yoga classes in after 2pm are designed to help manage the Vata (fast, dry, airy and cold) dosha. Often we are stressed & overwhelmed and need some extra replenishment. This class will help balance the nervous system with pranayama (breathing exercise), yoga that is warm and slow paced followed by a guided meditation. A beautifull compliment to our very Yang lifestyle.  This class is recommended for ALL level yogis.

Minding Your Pitta:

Pitta is the energy of transformation and metabolism; these energies are best used to break down and assimilate food, nutrients and information. During the pitta time of the day, 10am-2pm, our time is best served by eating a beautiful well-balanced organic Ayurvedic meal and/or finishing a large project for work; not practicing yoga or working out. You can balance the Pitta (hot, oily, sharp) dosha with Restorative Yoga classes if you are having an imbalance. If you just need to pacify your Pitta’s need to work hard & sweat it out, enjoy Sunrise Yoga before the heat of the day.
