Ayurveda is the system of health used in Vedic cultures such as present-day India. Practiced continually for thousands of years, Ayurveda is a body of precious knowledge that has been protected and passed through generations of teachers, students and practitioners.

Based on very simple principles that are intuitive and easy to understand, Ayurveda can be one of our most skillful tools for maintaining health and well-being. The word Ayurveda translates as "science of life" (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). The two main guiding principles of Ayurveda are 1.) the mind and the body are inextricably connected, and 2.) nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind.  Getting to know the principles of this science goes a long way in regaining and maintaining the balance required to enjoy health in body, mind and spirit.

The lens of Ayurveda sees each individual as being a unique combination of qualities and elements that contribute to our constitutional type. Learning what is good for you becomes a process, the journey toward health on the road of Ayurveda.

Our work with Ayurveda begins with getting a constitutional assessment and understanding the nature of our predominant constiutional type. These types are known as kapha, pitta and vata, which could translate loosely as water, fire and air. Most of us have a combination of these qualities; usually there are one or even two that predominate, and sometimes an equal balance between the three. We have pitta-kapha types, vata-kapha types, any combination of the three doshas: kapha, pitta and vata.

The individual constitution with which we were born and which remains with us through our lives is called our prakriti, our "original state." Discovering and working with, instead of against, our true nature is the simple gift of Ayurveda.

Living in a hectic world full of environmental influences and psychological pressure, it is not surprising that our "original state," the prakriti, can be affected and we develop a temporary nature, what we call vikriti. The magic of the Sanskrit language, which is the language of ayurveda, is that one word has a range of meanings. Vikriti means alteration, disease, modification, agitation, revolt, changed condition; it is essentially showing the imbalance we may be suffering which takes us away from our "original state."

The idea is to know what our individual constitution needs in order to thrive and then create that for ourselves in a natural and harmonious way. A consultation with an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Ayurvedic Practitioner or Ayurvedic Doctor can help us to begin the process of understanding how what we eat, where we live, what we do, how we exercise, work, play, and sleep will affect us, either throwing us out of balance or assisting us in restoring our personal harmony.

The lifestyle and nutrition recommendations given by Ayurveda are best taken in a gentle, positive manner. Sudden, radical change in diet and lifestyle can be harmful and is seldom easy to maintain. With Ayurveda, we follow guidelines using our intelligence and intuition to make decisions about when to be flexible about our "regimes." The stress of maintaining a strict diet may be more harmful mentally than it is phyically beneficial!
